Grudges And Forgiving When It Is Hard

The story of Joseph in Egypt, at the time of the great famine, is a good example of what happens when we build up walls against people because of something they have done to hurt us.  So many people build up walls and grudges against people because of the wrongs they have done against them, instead of showing mercy and forgiveness. Speaking of Joseph, instead of him simply forgiving his brothers right away, after being sold by them into Egypt, he instead saw the famine and their needs as something he could use to get back at them. And he would do this where his brothers and his father would hurt the most and that is to take their youngest brother Benjamin captive and make him his servant. This was done by setting them up with their provisions before they traveled back to their father.  It would then be in Benjamin’s sack that Joseph would secretly hide a silver cup and then demand for them to be searched because it is missing.  So, as you can see here, he had a plot against them because of what they had done to him. You will see how this goes down, starting in Genesis, 1chapter 43 and then in 2chapter 44.  But the question is, should a man of God do such things or are we required to just forgive our brothers and sisters when they have wronged us? And to answer this, we will read what Jesus says about forgiveness and use His advice in this matter, since He is our guide in this life and the next.

Please know that the moment that Joseph insisted that his brothers bring his younger brother down to Egypt, before they could buy any food, is when His walls were still up in full force against them. Not only did his brothers and his family have to suffer longer without food because of Joseph’s demands, but now their youngest brother would be put in harms way because of this grudge. Now, as Christians we should know that this is wrong, but what is fascinating about this is that Joseph was a man of great faith in God. However, he still struggled for a time with forgiving his brothers after what they did to him. Now, I bring this up since this is something that is more common with people than you would think, even among Christians. So many people hold grudges against people that hurt them, when they themselves wish forgiveness from God. The sad thing about this is, God is only willing to forgive us if we forgive others. Jesus said, 3“for if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” (Matthew 6:14,15) I hope this makes people think twice before they do something against another person, based on what they did to them. So remember that your love and forgiveness towards others is dependent on your forgiveness with God. This is very important to know and understand for our salvation.

Let us pray:
Lord God, I know that many people have hurt me over the years, but I know that with Your love in my life all of the anger inside of me is washed away. My old life is in the past and all I want to do now is love everyone, as You love us. There are no more grudges, but only forgiveness for all people, no matter the circumstances. Because You have my hand and have shown me how to love, I have no more need or desire to harm others that have hurt me, but only show them love in return and help them. It is Your presence in my life that helps me understand the worth of every person and to just love them where they are at now. Even if someone now wants to show me harm, even physically hurt me, I am able to bare this with Your peace in my life. It may be hard to not retaliate against those that hate me, but it is in Your will to continue to reach these people with Your kindness, so I will do this all the same. It is only hard to forgive one another when I am not living in Your light, but for the world. All other times that I am being led by the Spirit is when I am able to make better choices and simply forgive others, as I desire the same from You Lord, when I fall. I know that I am also to blame when it comes to hurting others, when Your love is not inside of me and I hope that these people will have a heart to forgive me as well. Surely, forgiveness and mercy is what we need in this life and I pray that I may be the first to show it when it is asked of me. It is the least I can do because of Your mercy and forgiveness for all my sins. Thank You Lord. I love You. Amen.

2 And put my cup, the silver cup, in the sack’s mouth of the youngest, and his corn money. And he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken.
3 As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their asses.
4 And when they were gone out of the city, and not yet far off, Joseph said unto his steward, Up, follow after the men; and when thou dost overtake them, say unto them, Wherefore have ye rewarded evil for good?
5 Is not this it in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? ye have done evil in so doing.
6 And he overtook them, and he spake unto them these same words.
7 And they said unto him, Wherefore saith my lord these words? God forbid that thy servants should do according to this thing:
8 Behold, the money, which we found in our sacks’ mouths, we brought again unto thee out of the land of Canaan: how then should we steal out of thy lord’s house silver or gold?
9 With whomsoever of thy servants it be found, both let him die, and we also will be my lord’s bondmen.
10 And he said, Now also let it be according unto your words: he with whom it is found shall be my servant; and ye shall be blameless.

16 And Judah said, What shall we say unto my lord? what shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are my lord’s servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found.

18 Then Judah came near unto him, and said, Oh my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord’s ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant: for thou art even as Pharaoh.
19 My lord asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father, or a brother?
20 And we said unto my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loveth him.
21 And thou saidst unto thy servants, Bring him down unto me, that I may set mine eyes upon him.
22 And we said unto my lord, The lad cannot leave his father: for if he should leave his father, his father would die.
23 And thou saidst unto thy servants, Except your youngest brother come down with you, ye shall see my face no more.
24 And it came to pass when we came up unto thy servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.
25 And our father said, Go again, and buy us a little food.
26 And we said, We cannot go down: if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down: for we may not see the man’s face, except our youngest brother be with us.
27 And thy servant my father said unto us, Ye know that my wife bare me two sons:
28 And the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces; and I saw him not since:
29 And if ye take this also from me, and mischief befall him, ye shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.
30 Now therefore when I come to thy servant my father, and the lad be not with us; seeing that his life is bound up in the lad’s life;
31 It shall come to pass, when he seeth that the lad is not with us, that he will die: and thy servants shall bring down the gray hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to the grave.
32 For thy servant became surety for the lad unto my father, saying, If I bring him not unto thee, then I shall bear the blame to my father for ever.
33 Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren.
34 For how shall I go up to my father, and the lad be not with me? lest peradventure I see the evil that shall come on my father.

3Matthew 6:1-15 (KJV)
1 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.
2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:
4 That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
