David Danced Before The Lord

David may not have been a saint in the way he lived a portion of his life, but he sure knew when to call upon the name of the Lord for help and how to worship Him. Many times he would dance and play instruments to praise God. You can liken this to worship service today. There may be a piano, drums, guitar, with a singer. And as they perform, if their hearts are for God, they do it for the Lord, as David did. In 2 Samuel 6, we learn that 1“David and all the house of Israel played before the Lord on all manner of instruments made of fir wood, even on harps, and on psalteries, and on timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals.” (2 Samuel 6:5) He loved the Lord so much, that all he could do is worship Him. In all this, there was a man named Uzzah, who while David was dancing, tried to touch the ark of God and the oxen shook, where 1“the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God.” (2 Samuel 6:7) And although this displeased David, he also began to fear God. It was then that 1“David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obededom into the city of David with gladness. And it was so, that when they that bare the ark of the Lord had gone six paces, he sacrificed oxen and fatlings.” (2 Samuel 6:12,13) You see, he saw how God felt about the ark and didn’t let anybody touch it, but brought it with him with gladness. Then, he did what each of us should do when God shows us something, is give Him a sacrifice. Now, although we don’t offer animals anymore, we offer the Lord our hearts, in order to serve Him with all that we have.

Now, if you thought that David stopped dancing and worshiping God after all this happened with the ark of the covenant, then you are mistaken. It is recorded that 1“David danced before the Lord with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod. So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet. And as the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal Saul’s daughter looked through a window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before the Lord; and she despised him in her heart. And they brought in the ark of the Lord, and set it in his place, in the midst of the tabernacle that David had pitched for it: and David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord. And as soon as David had made an end of offering burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts.” (2 Samuel 6:14-18) So the Lord was honored in not only how David worshipped him in his music and dance, but also how he took care of the ark of the covenant and sacrificed to Him also. Although Michal was not happy with all his dancing, there will also be people that mock us for how we love God and worship Him also. They may think that we are going overboard in our crying out to Him, lifting up our hands to Him in song and worship, and how we treat God’s stuff in our lives. As Christians, we do as David did and allow the Holy Spirit to dwell inside of us, while not quenching it. We also go so far as to walk in His light and honor Him in how we sacrifice our time for Him. So much can be done when God is the center of our life.

Let us pray:
Oh Lord, it is so good just to lift my hands up in praise and worship Your great Name. There are even times that all I want to do is move around while crying out to You in prayer. Some times when a worship song comes on, I just want to dance before You, for You deserve all that I am within me. I am saved because You died for me on the cross. I am so blessed because the Savior of the world decided to dine with me. My life is changed because You are with me now. I can call upon Your Name and know that You will be there to answer me. There is no doubt in my mind that there are great and mighty things in store for my life, because I seek You often, even in my thoughts. Thank You so much for speaking life inside of my lost soul. Because the Holy Spirit is with me now, I am made alive in You. There is no holding back the things I am able to do now because You have me by the hand. Even when I was in sin, You heard my cries and carried me on your shoulders to safety. I am no longer weak but made strong in You. I can do all things, because You strengthen me in Your Word, in prayer, in worship, and in service to You. Thank You, Lord. I pledge my whole life to serve You now and forever. Come and make a place for me not only in heaven but inside of me at all times. With Your shield, the enemy has no place in my life. I can walk in Your love and not have to worry about sin and doubt entering my life. You have paid it all for me. Now, I just need You evermore. I love You, Lord. All the praise and glory to Your great Name. I honor You not only with my words but in my actions. Use me for Your kingdom. I honor You. Amen.

2 Samuel 6
12 Samuel 6 (KJV)
1 Again, David gathered together all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand.
2 And David arose, and went with all the people that were with him from Baale of Judah, to bring up from thence the ark of God, whose name is called by the name of the Lord of hosts that dwelleth between the cherubims.
3 And they set the ark of God upon a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab that was in Gibeah: and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drave the new cart.
4 And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab which was at Gibeah, accompanying the ark of God: and Ahio went before the ark.
5 And David and all the house of Israel played before the Lord on all manner of instruments made of fir wood, even on harps, and on psalteries, and on timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals.
6 And when they came to Nachon’s threshingfloor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen shook it.
7 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God.
8 And David was displeased, because the Lord had made a breach upon Uzzah: and he called the name of the place Perezuzzah to this day.
9 And David was afraid of the Lord that day, and said, How shall the ark of the Lord come to me?
10 So David would not remove the ark of the Lord unto him into the city of David: but David carried it aside into the house of Obededom the Gittite.
11 And the ark of the Lord continued in the house of Obededom the Gittite three months: and the Lord blessed Obededom, and all his household.
12 And it was told king David, saying, The Lord hath blessed the house of Obededom, and all that pertaineth unto him, because of the ark of God. So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obededom into the city of David with gladness.
13 And it was so, that when they that bare the ark of the Lord had gone six paces, he sacrificed oxen and fatlings.
14 And David danced before the Lord with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod.
15 So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet.
16 And as the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal Saul’s daughter looked through a window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before the Lord; and she despised him in her heart.
17 And they brought in the ark of the Lord, and set it in his place, in the midst of the tabernacle that David had pitched for it: and David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord.
18 And as soon as David had made an end of offering burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts.
19 And he dealt among all the people, even among the whole multitude of Israel, as well to the women as men, to every one a cake of bread, and a good piece of flesh, and a flagon of wine. So all the people departed every one to his house.
20 Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, How glorious was the king of Israel to day, who uncovered himself to day in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovereth himself!
21 And David said unto Michal, It was before the Lord, which chose me before thy father, and before all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the Lord, over Israel: therefore will I play before the Lord.
22 And I will yet be more vile than thus, and will be base in mine own sight: and of the maidservants which thou hast spoken of, of them shall I be had in honour.
23 Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no child unto the day of her death.
