Making TV An Idol

Many people who think they are Christians and saved are really not. The reason why is that they have created their own idols in their lives and God does not matter much to them. What are these idols, you might ask? Well, it can be your phone, tablet, TV, gaming systems, and much more. And for this devotional, we will talk about how people have made their TV their idol. Most people go home each day from work and immediately turn on their TV. Then they watch their favorite TV Shows, movies, and play video games. Then, after a few hours, it is already bedtime and the TV gets turned off in the living room. People then go upstairs to their bedroom to go to bed, but what happens there? Again the TV is turned on in order to watch the news and other things until they are ready to go sleep. So what is happening here? I’ll tell you what is happening! People have made their TVs their idols. Is God important to them? No. There TV is, however. To these people I ask, so when was the last time you read the Bible or really prayed? And many times people get upset with me just asking this question. But to those who do answer me, most of them say, oh, I’ve read the Bible before. I just don’t have time to read or pray much during the day. And these same people think they are Christians, which is sad. Wow! Can you believe that? I will warn you now that anybody who has made their TV their idol is not saved. These same people will wake up in hell one day if they do not repent of these sins. Only Jesus can wash away their sins, but what they do with their time must be changed.

It was the Lord God who said the following in the ten commandments. “Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.” (Exodus 20:3-6) John said, “Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.” (1 John 5:21) And the Lord Jesus said, “He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” (Revelation 21:7-8) There is a warning from God that any person who puts other things above Him has also made them their idols. God’s wrath is upon such people. Therefore, God is just by sending these people to hell when they die. Even after judgment is set, will they be thrown into the lake of fire. My friends, you do not want to go there. However, in order to escape it, you must make a choice to follow Jesus and become separate from the world. That nothing will become Your idol again. Give all your allegiance and worship to Jesus, our God, who saves.

Let us pray:
Oh Lord, I pray that people will stop giving themselves over to things that will never help them. Things that will only lead them apart from You and not lead them to know You, Jesus. TV is an idol in our society and people are leaning on it over You, which is sad. I just don’t know how to reach these people who are in sin and don’t realize it. How they have made television their idol and don’t care. Lord, people need to know that believing in You is an action. It isn’t a one day a week thing, but an everyday event. We aren’t known for sitting idly by watching our favorite TV shows but are busy doing Your work for Your kingdom. There are souls to be saved and who has time to turn on their TV anymore when the Holy Spirit is leading us to do more. I know the urgency of getting up and out of my house and witnessing to the lost. I love doing this, for it brings me great joy to see people hear the good news of the gospel and be saved. What a blessing it is to see people so desirous to receive Bibles and gospel tracts and even prayer. All I know, Lord, is that when I go out in faith is that much is accomplished for Your kingdom, even healings. However, if I remain at home like everyone else and watch TV, then time will go by faster. Even my time with You will become shorter and shorter. Over time I know I will lose sight of Your presence if I am not careful. Therefore, keep me apart from the television set. Don’t allow me to get sucked into it again. I love You more than making it my idol. Amen.
