Jesus Said He Is God: Mark 2

In Mark 2, Jesus said that He is the “Son of Man” twice, not just once. In regards to the person who was sick of the palsy it reads, “when Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee. But there was certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts, why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only? And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts? Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house. And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.” (Mark 2:5-12) Notice that the scribes said that only God could forgive sins, but then Jesus say that since He is the “Son of Man”, He has this very power to forgive and to heal the sick. This power He is speaking of is power that comes from God, of which the “Son of Man” is.

The second portion of this chapter is when the disciples were eating corn in a cornfield on the Sabbath day. It reads, “and it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn. And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful? And he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him? How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him? And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.” (Mark 2:23-28) So we learn that Jesus is the Lord God. That He has the power to forgive sins, heal the sick, and to call the shots on what should or should not take place on the Sabbath day. Wow! I can just imagine what the Pharisees and Scribes were thinking in this hour. It would have been awesome if they came to understand that yes, this is God in the flesh speaking. But we know this didn’t happen. Thankfully, we as Christians know this now. Even have we made Jesus the Lord of our lives. For this reason, He has forgiven us our sins and healed us, both body and soul.

Let us pray:
Oh Lord, I pray that we will all come to a greater realization of Your divinity. Yes, God, I pray that people will come to know You the way You always desired for us to know You. That You, Jesus, are God, who was made flesh. How You came down to save us all from our sins. But not just this. You came to teach us how to live a life pleasing in Your sight. Even teachings that would lead us on the path to eternal life. But how can people know the way unless they are reading the Bible? The answer is that they cannot. If people just trust in their pastors and teachers and not get into Your Word for themselves, they will never know what it truly for or against You. I love how You have spoken to me. I may have resisted for some time, but I am so grateful that I began to follow You after all was set and done. You could have given up on me a long time ago, but Your hands of mercy were ever towards me. I may have left You, but You never left my side. Thank You for drawing me to You day in and day out. Just like the prodigal son, You stood there waiting for His return and have done the same for me. What a great God You are. Because of Your mercy, my eyes have been opened. I have ears to hear and eyes to see what You would do for my life. Thank You, God. Continue to lead me from temptation and build me up in Your amour. I need Your guidance and direction to be happy. I love You. Amen.
