Esau Sold His Birthright

What does your salvation mean with God? Does it mean that you would do anything to keep it intact? I say this because many people in this life say they believe in Jesus and once lived for Him for a time, however, talking to them now you wouldn’t even think they are a Christian. What they have done is sell their rights to be saved for other things in life that can make them happy for a time. It can be making more and more money, having more and more possessions, and being fulfilled by their lusts and covetousness. Sexual sin is often prevalent, where many people hang out with the wrong crowds, are into drugs, alcohol, pornography, violent video games, crude movies and tv shows, listen to bad music, and much more. These are the types of people that are dead in the faith and need to be awakened. Reading the Bible daily and starting to pray often would help this. However, as it stands, they have in a sense sold their birthright, as Esau did. His story reads, “and Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom. And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.” (Genesis 25:29-31)

Because of how hungry Esau was, he was willing to give up many blessings from God. These blessings weren’t just for him but for all his posterity. Thankfully, this was supposed to happen, as Jacob was the rightful heir to the birthright, though Isaac did not know this. The story continues with the following verses, “And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me? And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.” (Genesis 25:32-34) Isn’t it interesting that when people give up things that are of God, they often despise Christians afterward, as Esau did with his brother? I have spoken with so many people like this on the streets, where they are still upset because of something that happened sometime in the past. Thankfully with God, people can give up on Him, but as long as they have breath, there is still hope for their salvation. So don’t think you are past being saved because of what you have done. The mercy and forgiveness of God are for anybody, no matter who and what they have done. Amen.

Let us pray:
Oh Lord, I pray that You will not only help me but many other Christians this day. Help us to stay focused on the prize at the end of this life. Nothing can compete with what we can obtain in heaven. Things can appear better on paper, especially when the lusts of the flesh are intrigued. However, there is always regret after falling into sin. No matter how good things feel in the moment, it is not worth the shame that comes later. Especially when I know that I have hurt You, God, in a way that I cannot go back and change. The moment I realize that I have quenched the Spirit is when I know that it will be a journey getting Your respect back. Truly, a relationship with You, Lord, is more important than anything this world can offer me. I have learned this over time and I pray that other people will understand this before it is too late. To know You and to have You know us is what really matters in this life. Thank You for my beautiful wife and two daughters. You have blessed me in ways that I wish I could repay You. But what I am most grateful for is Your salvation because of Your death on the cross and resurrection. Your blood, Jesus, has covered me and forgiven me of all my sins. And now I will rise with You in the first resurrection. I love You. Amen.
