The Blessings Of Jacob And Esau

In Genesis, chapter 27, we read about Jacob, with the help of his mother, tricking his father to think that he was Esau in order to have his blessings. On the surface, such trickery and lying in a family who loved God is uncalled for, but this had to happen. Jacob was the rightful heir for Jesus’s lineage to come from. So let’s now look at both Jacob’s and Esau’s blessings from their father Isaac. Jacobs’ blessing from Isaac is the following. “And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his raiment, and blessed him, and said, See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the Lord hath blessed: Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine: Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee: be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother’s sons bow down to thee: cursed be every one that curseth thee, and blessed be he that blesseth thee.” (Genesis 27:27-29) Bowing down in these verses is in the representation of Jesus who came from the lineage of Jacob, who is called Israel.

Every knee will bow at the name of Jesus! “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth.” (Philippians 2:10) How beautiful is this blessing, for Jesus is the fullfilling of it. Unfortunately, Esau’s blessing had the Lord Jesus missing from it. His blessing reads, “and Esau said unto his father, Hast thou but one blessing, my father? bless me, even me also, O my father. And Esau lifted up his voice, and wept. And Isaac his father answered and said unto him, Behold, thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above; And by thy sword shalt thou live, and shalt serve thy brother; and it shall come to pass when thou shalt have the dominion, that thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck.” (Genesis 27:38-40) Instead of ruling like his brother and his lineage with Christ at the head, Esau’s lineage would live and die by the sword. This has happened to Esau and his lineage over the centuries. Some say that these people are Muslims, but without Christ in their lives they are unsaved.

Let us pray:
Oh Lord, I pray that we will all grow in the knowledge of You, Jesus. And not just knowledge, but a deep heartfelt relationship with You. I know that for many years I have missed out on having You in my day-to-day life and I am sorry. Other things were more important. Thankfully, You didn’t give up on me, nor desert me, although I deserved it. I keep coming back to You and You keep accepting me in open arms. Thank You, Lord. Do I deserve to be saved? No. But nor do the many others that have repented of their wickedness and came to You also. I just pray that You will use me for Your kingdom. And not just how I have served You in the past and even now, but more so in Your perfect will. Lord, keep me in Your arms of mercy, that when the enemy comes, I do not fall. Lead me from temptation. I love You more than what the world offers me. Take every ounce of greed, covetousness, and lust that remains in my heart. I don’t want those wicked things or thoughts in my life, but Your holiness. I choose to follow You. I love You, Jesus. Amen.
