The First Passover

There is a reason why God’s people celebrated Passover each and every year for centuries. This is because of what happened during the time of God’s last plague upon the Egyptians in the times of Moses. They were delivered from death the night that the destroyer came. This is when the firstborn of the Egyptians were killed. And here is why. It is written, “then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said unto them, Draw out and take you a lamb according to your families, and kill the passover. And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the bason, and strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the bason; and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning. For the Lord will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the Lord will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you. And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and to thy sons for ever.” (Exodus 12:21-24)

God did save His people through the blood of the lamb. The people took the blood of the lamb that was slain and struck it against the side posts of their houses. This blood signified the coming Lamb who would be slain for our sins, but until Jesus came, spotless lambs were killed for the sake of God’s people. This story continues and reads, “and it shall come to pass, when ye be come to the land which the Lord will give you, according as he hath promised, that ye shall keep this service. And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you, What mean ye by this service? That ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of the Lord’s passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the people bowed the head and worshipped. And the children of Israel went away, and did as the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they.” (Exodus 12:25-28) The destroyer is the angel of death. And just as the people did not have to fear death, we don’t have to also with Jesus in our lives. Amen.

Let us pray:
Thank You, Lord, for saving me. I am grateful to be in a time where I can come to the Father and then be covered by the blood of the Lamb, who is Jesus. During the years of the Passover, people hoped and prayed for a Lamb that would be enough for all people and for all eternity. However, no lamb on earth could do this. Thankfully, Your Son, Jesus, did come, in order to take away the sins of the world. Surely, the blood that He shed for us on the cross is the greatest sacrifice of all time. That is why I preach the cross of Jesus whenever I am on the streets. This is a message of hope, and that is why I wear a cross and bring it with me when I preach. Lord, I don’t want anyone to leave this earth without knowing what You did for them on the cross. Surely, our sins may be great and nothing we can do on our own could change the fact that we deserve to be punished and die in our sins. Thankfully, when we come to You, there is forgiveness and mercy. Thank You, Lord. I am nothing without You in my life. Lead me straightway home to You. I love You, Jesus. Amen.
