Stop Using Profanity For God’s Sake

Have you ever wondered if what you are saying is pleasing unto God or men? Well, you will know that you are only pleasing mankind when there is foul language coming out of your mouth, but this will not be the case with God. My friends, if you often use profanity, you are only grieving the Holy Spirit. The goodness of God is not in you, but only your old man/woman is acting up. Therefore, you must put down all evil speaking for God’s sake, or else you are not a true Christian or follower of Jesus. A follower would want to do God’s will and listen to what the Word of God says and apply it to their lives. Therefore, do this and learn from Paul, as he said, 1“let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.” (Ephesians 4:29-32) You see, he mentions corrupt communication and evil speaking here, which is not good for anyone to hear. Instead, you should be seeking God’s forgiveness for cussing. And what is worse is that saying of my God is also blaspheming God. So repent for swearing and using the name of the Lord God in vain. Your soul could be at stake of going to hell if your life is not in line with God. People may not think that using foul language is evil, but my friends, if it is grieving the Holy Spirit, then it is also making God upset. And if we are making God upset, then we are not on His side, but the world.

Paul is a great teacher in the Bible and not only taught the people in Ephesus about repenting of our evil speaking, but also when he wrote a letter to the Colossians. You see, the church had some people still living their old lives, while saying corrupt things to people, and God needed to correct them, as he does to us also through His words. He said, 2“mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him.” (Colossians 3:5-10) We may have once walked and talked like everyone else did, but all this is given up for the Lord, as Paul said. In this new transformed life in Christ, we are able to say and do things much differently. Where we once used filthy communication with others, God is now helping us treat others with respect, kindness, and love. Instead of anger filling our hearts, of which causes us to say things we shouldn’t, we’ve allowed the love of God to fill our lives. So listen to God and 1“put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind.” (Ephesians 4:22,23) If you do this, then darkness will leave your life and you will be lit up in the light of Christ. Be an example of the faith, starting today.

Let us pray:
Oh Lord, I pray for every person who currently has a problem with using profanity. I know how wrong this it, for it grieves the Spirit in me when people are using it. If only people could understand the importance of the Holy Spirit, then they would no longer be using evil speaking, but by seeking to say and do as You would have for their lives. There would be a transformation in people’s lives, if they could just allow You to rip from their hearts and minds every form of cussing, talking down to people, crude jokes, and anger problems. These issues are so prevalent today and no longer people can put on a good face at church and do these things, while still believing in You. The Spirit is speaking against such things, and I pray that people will confess their faults one to another, and more importantly, to You in prayer. People need to ask forgiveness for every foul thing that has come from their mouths. For they do not know the number of people that have also been offended by their swearing or cussing. People that love You, like I do, would never want to be a loose canon when it comes to our speech. Instead, we take every thought captive, that You may help us say the right things to people. Lord, it is my desire that people will put off their old man/women for Your cause. Then, can You transform their lives. I know how it felt when I was born again, and I wish that more people would experience this also. So come now into every person’s heart that says they believe in You, but are still living for the flesh. Give them a heart change and point them on Your path of righteousness. Then, will they understand that showing kindness and love towards others is much better than saying profane things. You are my God and I believe in You. Teach me to walk in Your light all my days. I love You more than anything this world can offer me. Amen.

Ephesians 4
1Ephesians 4 (KJV)
1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,
2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;
3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;
5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
7 But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)
11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,
18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
19 Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.
20 But ye have not so learned Christ;
21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:
22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.
26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
27 Neither give place to the devil.
28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.
29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.
Colossians 3
2Colossians 3 (KJV)
1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.
5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
6 For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:
7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.
8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.
9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.
12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;
13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.
14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
18 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.
19 Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.
20 Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.
21 Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.
22 Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God;
23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;
24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.
25 But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.
